Learning record store (LRS)

A learning record store (LRS) is a database that receives, stores and returns xAPI statements: records of learning activity such as “Alex passed the forklift assessment”. An LRS can sit inside an LMS or stand alone, collecting learning data from many systems into one place for reporting and analysis.

Why it matters

An LRS lets you combine learning data from your LMS, apps, simulations and other tools, so reporting isn't limited to what happened inside one system.

How it works

xAPI-enabled content and apps send statements to the LRS over its API. Reporting tools, or the LMS itself, query the LRS to build dashboards and learner histories.

Common pitfalls

Treating an LRS as a reporting tool. It stores the data; you still need something to turn statements into useful answers.
