Continuing professional development (CPD)

Continuing professional development (CPD) is the ongoing learning professionals do to keep their skills and knowledge current, often required by a professional body. It is usually measured in hours or points per year, and professionals keep a record of their CPD activities as evidence for renewal of their membership or licence.

Why it matters

In professions such as accounting, law, healthcare and engineering, falling short on CPD can mean losing the right to practise.

How it works

Each activity, like a course, conference or webinar, is worth a number of hours or points. Individuals log them, and professional bodies audit a sample of records.

Common pitfalls

CPD records kept separately from the LMS, so completed training never makes it into the log.
