Competency

A competency is a defined combination of knowledge, skills and behaviours needed to do a job well, such as “handles customer complaints” or “operates a forklift safely”. Competency frameworks list the competencies for each role, and training is mapped to them so that progress can be measured against what the role actually requires.

Why it matters

Competencies link training to performance. Instead of “completed five courses”, you can say “meets the requirements for this role”.

How it works

Each role has a set of competencies, each competency has evidence such as courses, assessments or observations, and people are rated against them. Gaps then drive what training is assigned.

Common pitfalls

Frameworks so detailed nobody maintains them. Start with the few competencies that matter most for each role.
