Certification and recertification

Certification is formal recognition that someone has completed required training or demonstrated a skill, often with a certificate. Recertification is repeating that training before the certification expires, typically every one to three years, so that knowledge stays current and the organisation can prove ongoing compliance.

Why it matters

Many roles need certifications that lapse, from first aid to forklift operation to security awareness. An expired certificate can mean someone isn't allowed to do their job.

How it works in Litmos

Litmos can issue certificates on completion, and courses can be set up so that a completion is only valid for a period. When it expires, the learner needs to complete the course again.

Common pitfalls

Finding out about expiries after they've happened. Look at what's due to expire in the next month, not just what's already overdue.
