Learning and development (L&D)

Learning and development (L&D) is the function within an organisation responsible for building employees' skills and knowledge. It covers identifying training needs, designing or buying content, running programmes such as onboarding and leadership development, managing the LMS, and measuring whether training improves performance.

Why it matters

L&D connects training to business goals: getting new people productive, keeping the organisation compliant, and growing future leaders.

What L&D teams do

Analyse needs, design and source content, deliver programmes, administer the LMS, report on completion and compliance, and evaluate impact.

Common pitfalls

Small teams spending most of their time on LMS admin and manual reporting, leaving little time for the programmes themselves.
