LXP vs LMS

A learning experience platform (LXP) is built around learner discovery: personalised recommendations, content from many sources and social features. A learning management system (LMS) is built around administration: assigning required training, tracking completions and reporting. Many organisations use an LMS for mandatory training, and some add an LXP for self-directed learning.

Why it matters

The two are often confused when buying software. If your main need is proving that people completed required training, an LMS's assignment and reporting features matter more than recommendations.

How they differ

An LMS is admin-led: someone decides what each person must complete and by when. An LXP is learner-led: people browse and choose. Many modern LMSs, Litmos included, have added some LXP-style features such as content libraries and learner-facing course catalogues.

Common pitfalls

Expecting an LXP to handle compliance reporting, or expecting an LMS alone to drive voluntary engagement. Decide which job matters most before choosing.
